Just like liability insurance, you select the amount of coverage and pay an additional premium and if your injuries are larger than the responsible party’s liability insurance coverage, your own Underinsured Motorist insurance will kick in to cover your medical damages. As an example, if you have Underinsured Motorist coverage in the amount of $250,000 and your hospital bills are $250,000 and the person who caused the accident only has $25,000 liability insurance, your insurance will pay $225,000 to cover your hospital bills. If you only purchased $100,000 of Underinsured Motorist coverage, you would have received $75,000 from your automotive insurance company.   If you have purchased $500,000 of Underinsured Motorist coverage, you would have received $225,000 to cover your hospital bills.   RS Law will review your insurance coverages and make a claim to the appropriate parties. Underinsured Motorist is coverage that would have needed to be in place PRIOR to the accident and will only make payments if you are not at fault.
